Mosquito Control
The Miami-Dade County Department of Public Works' Mosquito Control Division is responsible for mosquito abatement throughout the county.
Since 2008: Residents should call the County directly at 3-1-1 to
- Report mosquito infestations to trigger a spray mission by the County
- Be notified in advance of spraying
The County provides the following services for the Village:
- Larval and adult surveillance 3 times per week
- Daily inspections once mosquito population increases
- Aerial or truck spraying once population increase is confirmed
- Catch basins treated annually with larvicide
- Chemically sensitive individuals can register with the County to be notified in advance of spraying.
Supplemental Efforts Undertaken by the Village
The Village takes a proactive approach to mosquito control within the
Village limits. However, most mosquitos originate in the salt marshes
in Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park. Others are carried by the wind
from natural areas south and southwest of Key Biscayne. Local efforts by your government include:
- Deployment of larvicide capsules, designed to prevent local larval mosquitoes
from becoming adults, in each of the 785 drainage
structures within the Village limits, including storm water drainage
basins. This program was initiated in 2006 and will be repeated in 2009. The County began a similar program for the Village this year, with the result that local drainage structures will be treated twice.
- The
Village Public Works Department entered into a contract with Clark
Environmental Mosquito Management in 2005 to provide spraying services
supplementing County efforts during peak mosquito season on a per
application basis. This service will continue in 2009 with treatments scheduled on “as requested
basis”. Clarke Mosquito Control will respond between 24 and 72 hours,
depending on their demand. The company is able to predict the mosquito
season by observing the amount of larvae breeding locally. he summary of
service provided by Clarke is as follows:
- Surveillance and Monitoring
- Community-wide truck treatments
- Back pack barrier treatments
- The Public Works Department is specifically planning for an enjoyable 4th of July Event.
