The Village of Key Biscayne Council has voted in favor of approving the municipality’s 2021-’22 fiscal year budget. The approved $35.5 million budget is for the Village’s general operations as well as the Public Works; Building, Zoning and Planning; Parks, Recreations and Open Spaces; Police; and Fire Rescue Departments. With a millage rate of 3.199, lower than last year’s 3.2022, the Village of Key Biscayne remains at the lowest overlapping rate in Miami-Dade County.
“This year’s budget is designed to use our resources wisely, while at the same time provide the public safety, services, and infrastructure our residents deserve. It is the foundation of what we want the Village to be in the years to come. To deliver on what our residents expect, we must invest in the right projects and people now,” said Village Manage Steven C. Williamson. “We want to continue to build a vibrant community, with a high quality of life and resilient infrastructure.”
Major initiatives that have affected this year’s budget, include:
- $6.8M to take on 24 capital projects that range from building Paradise Park, improving Crandon Blvd traffic and safety, and embarking on our stormwater infrastructure program. $3.5M from the American Rescue Plan as well as more than $1.2M in additional external funding will cover much of this year’s capital program.
- Reduction in $1.3M of debt service and fees resulting from the Village paying off matured bonds and loans as well as consolidating and refinancing existing debt.
- Increased personnel to provide the services our residents are asking for from our Building, Public Works, and Police Departments, as well as providing four beach rangers and a community programs coordinator.
“Our team is grateful for the Council’s support and confidence in what the Village staff can do to continue to improve the Village of Key Biscayne and ensure that our residents are able to enjoy the island paradise they call home,” Williamson continued. “This year’s budget puts residents first and is a down payment on the future. Our team is ready to deliver. It is time to get things done. We have a bold vision that strives to create a safe, thriving, and vibrant community. Key Biscayne is home to engaging and active citizens who enjoy our public spaces and diverse programs, all of which we want to maintain and improve while building a stronger, more resilient future.”
